The following resources provide information to assist in animals rabies prevention and control in
the interest of public health:
- Rabies risk assessments - Human health care providers, veterinarians and CD nurses
caring for patients with potential rabies exposures may contact N.C. DHHS Public Health
Veterinarians (919-733-3419; 24/7) for evaluation of exposure circumstances and advisement
on whether post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is appropriate. In the case of animals, the
determination of whether or not control measures should be applied is made under NC
GS § 130A-197 .

approvals, and inspections of all veterinary practices throughout the state.

medicine in the state.

Dept of Agriculture and Consumer Services: Protects the health of the state's livestock and
poultry population through the administration of regulatory animal health programs and its
diagnostic laboratory system. Responsibilities include the surveillance, monitoring,
control, and eradication of diseases; regulation of animal movements; inspections and
testing on the farm and at markets and sales; providing diagnostic laboratory service to
owners and their veterinarians; and conducting regulatory disease testing to facilitate
interstate and export movement of animals and food products.
